Consumer Protection

Where I stand

Protecting Youth and Promoting Safe Sports Equipment

Through hearings in the Senate and working with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), I have been leading the call to improve standards for youth football helmets and to look for ways to prevent concussions in youth sports. I have been pushing the FTC to investigate false and misleading claims by youth athletic equipment makers, and have also called on the CPSC to develop new standards for testing the safety of football helmets.

Preventing Cell Phone Bill Shock

Today, "smart phones" and advanced wireless devices are mainstream. But unknowingly exceeding data and minute limits can generate a hefty bill. I introduced legislation to direct the Federal Communications Commission to develop rules that would prevent consumers from getting hit with cell phone "bill shock" from unexpected data and roaming charges. This eventually resulted in a private sector agreement by wireless companies to alert consumers when they are approaching the end of their monthly voice and data contract limits, or when they are about to incur international roaming charges.

Closing Loopholes For Predatory Lenders

New Mexico passed strict rules to crack down on predatory payday lending, but some unscrupulous vendors have openly flaunted state law by moving their operations online. That's why I helped introduce the Stopping Abuse and Fraud in Electronic (SAFE) Lending Act. The SAFE Lending Act would crack down on the worst practices of the online payday lending industry and give states more power to protect consumers from predatory loans.
