Where I Stand

Throughout my career I have fought to protect Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories because of their critical role ensuring American security and the vital economic foundation they provide for New Mexico. As we look to the future, it is important that our labs are prepared to face the changing national security threats now facing our country. I believe the labs’ work should grow in the areas of nuclear nonproliferation, homeland security, counterterrorism, intelligence analysis and expanded energy research.

Los Alamos National Laboratory

In my 10 years as the Congressman representing northern New Mexico, I stood resolutely behind Los Alamos National Laboratory and the men and women who work there. Today, I continue to work extensively with the lab’s leadership to support the lab’s current mission and encourage growth in new areas of research as a way to ensure their long-term viability and to move towards the future. LANL is leading the charge to combat both existing and emerging national security threats and I will continue to press Congress to support those efforts.

Sandia National Laboratories

In addition to its work on developing and maintaining the United States’ nuclear deterrent, Sandia National Laboratories has also created technologies for treaty verification, international arms control, energy security, cooperative threat reduction and homeland security. This work is key to minimizing the threat of nuclear materials around the world. Sandia has been a national leader always on the cutting edge of research including its recent work on alternative energy research and providing new means and methods for cyber security. As with Los Alamos, I will fight for continued funding for this vital national establishment.
