When New Mexico parents put dinner on the table, they deserve to know if the food they're serving was produced with genetically modified ingredients. That’s why I support GMO labeling and worked in the Senate to defeat an anti-labeling bill, known as the DARK Act.
The DARK Act would have banned states from requiring real GMO labeling, enshrining in law that states and companies can leave consumers guessing. I think that when it comes to feeding your family, New Mexicans should be able to get all the facts if they want them.
Call on Congress to support GMO labeling and protect consumers’ #RightToKnow.
We can strike a balance that works for everyone simply by listing GMO ingredients in a clear, accurate way. That’s fair to both consumers and food manufacturers, including family farms and agricultural co-ops in New Mexico.
I’m supporting a bill that does just that. The Biotechnology Food Labeling and Uniformity Act would give food manufacturers several options for how to clearly disclose GMO ingredients in their products. Consumers would be able to know if the food they buy contains GMOs, and producers nationwide could rely on a uniform standard.
That’s the kind of commonsense solution we all can get behind.
Whether you live in Santa Fe, Las Cruces, Texas or Vermont, this bill would ensure we all know what’s in the food we eat and how it was produced — so we can make informed decisions for our families and our environment.
New Mexicans shouldn’t be left in the dark, and I’ll continue fighting for laws to ensure all Americans can readily learn whether the food they buy contains GMO ingredients.
