WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.) applauded the inclusion of the national conservation goal, his 30 by 30 Resolution to Save Nature , in the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis’ Congressional Action Plan for a Clean Energy Economy and a Healthy, Resilient, and Just America.
On Sunday, Udall authored an
op-ed in the Denver Post
with
Senator Michael Bennet (D-Colo.),
calling on the Senate to take action on the
30 by 30 Resolution
.
U.S. Representative Deb Haaland (D-N.M.)
is the sponsor of the companion 30 by 30 Resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“The inclusion of the 30 by 30 goal in this major climate action plan is an important recognition that the nature crisis and the climate crisis cannot be separated,” Udall said. “These two emergencies are interconnected: as we continue to destroy nature at a devastating rate, we are accelerating the emission of harmful greenhouse gases that are hurtling us toward a climate catastrophe. Scientists tell us that we must conserve at least 30 percent of our lands and waters by 2030 to prevent mass extinction. And doing so by restoring and preserving natural habitat will also bring major climate benefits. We have no choice but to be bold and act on climate and conservation in tandem. There is too much at stake. There is major bipartisan support in the country behind the 30 by 30 initiative, and the Senate must listen to the American people and act before it’s too late.”
