Udall Announces $500,000 for New School-Based Health Center in Santa Teresa

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall announced La Clinica de Familia, Inc. of Las Cruces will receive a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to expand medical, mental health and dental services to residents in southern New Mexico.

The two-year grant will allow La Clinica de Familia to build a new health center next to Santa Teresa High School and strengthen its existing school-based health services. The funding comes from capital project outlays under the Affordable Care Act.

"As the health care law goes into effect, I'm glad to see resources directed towards school-based health centers in New Mexico," Udall said. "La Clinica de Familia has been providing quality medical care to area residents for more than 30 years. Having these comprehensive, full-time services available in local communities is a model that will result in better care and treatment."

La Clinica de Familia is a Federally Qualified Health Center that provides health and social service programs throughout more than 30 medical and dental providers in southern New Mexico.

The expanded health center is expected to open some time in the 2013-2014 school year.

To date, New Mexico has received more than $4,500,000 in federal funding for school-based health center grants.
