Udall Applauds House Passage of H.R.1, a Sweeping Democracy Reform Package

Udall will introduce companion legislation in the Senate to return democracy to its rightful owners, the American people

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.) applauded House passage of H.R. 1, the For the People Act , a comprehensive democracy reform package to fight corruption and repair our broken politics. Udall plans to soon introduce companion legislation in the U.S. Senate. The legislation builds off of the We The People Democracy Reform package , which Udall and U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) introduced in the 115th Congress. Udall issued the following statement:

“Today, the House took a historic step toward empowering the American people and freeing our democracy from the grasp of big money, special interests, and foreign adversaries. I look forward to soon introducing a companion reform package in the Senate and leading a coalition that is fully allied with House Democrats’ efforts.

“We were elected to represent the interests and will of all Americans. But our democratic system has been broken by secretive and corrupt politics, out of control money, and systemic and rampant disenfranchisement of voters. Too many Americans are understandably convinced that their government does not work for or represent them. So we must enact real reforms to restore the integrity of our democracy and bring accountability back to our politics.

“This is not about Democrats versus Republicans. This is about the people versus the special interests. I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to join with us to secure real reform to stamp out corruption, bring transparency, and put power back in the hands of the American people.”
