Udall: N.M. Receives $1.6 Million to Support AmeriCorps Jobs

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) today announced that the New Mexico Commission for Community Volunteerism will receive $1.6 million to support AmeriCorps projects across the state.

The AmeriCorps grant comes from the Corporation for National and Community Service and will fund 412 positions in areas such as education, health and wellness and youth service programs.

"With an economy that is still recovering, AmeriCorps members are more important to our communities than ever in addressing many social and economic challenges," Udall said. "This funding will help AmeriCorps members gain important leadership skills while contributing in ways that will make a lasting difference in New Mexico."

AmeriCorps is a national service program that engages Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to meet critical needs. Its members serve in thousands of nonprofit and faith-based organizations in rural and urban communities throughout the nation. Among other activities, they tutor and mentor youth, expand health services, build affordable housing, run after-school programs, support veterans, help communities respond to disasters, create trails through our parks, and recruit and train volunteers.

AmeriCorps engages 80,000 people each year in intensive, results-driven service through more than 14,000 nonprofits across the country. Since 1994, more than 700,000 Americans have provided more than 860 million hours of service to their communities and country through AmeriCorps.
