Udall has been highlighting #CensusCounts social media campaign
WASHINGTON —Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.) released the following statement encouraging New Mexicans to complete their Census survey on the first day of the data collection period for the 2020 Census:
“Today marks the beginning of the 2020 Census data collection period. Every New Mexican counts—and one of the biggest contributions that New Mexicans can make to their neighbors, themselves, their families and their communities is to fill out their Census form,” said Udall, senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. “The form is only ten questions, but it plays a big role in determining how much funding New Mexicans receive for vital federal programs such as Medicare and Medicaid , infrastructure, rural programs andschool lunches, so it’s critical that every one participates. The census does not have a citizenship question, and all information is private and protected by law from being shared with any other agency or branch of government.
“ New Mexico is particularly at risk of an undercount,” Udall continued. “Our communities could lose out on vital funding for health care and other programs that benefit New Mexicans and support jobs and our economy— just a 1 percent undercount in New Mexico could result in losing approximately $1 billion in federal funds over the next 10 years. We can’t allow that to happen. We know that every New Mexican counts, so let’s make sure that every New Mexican responds to the Census.”
Udall has launched a campaign on his social media channels, #CensusCounts , to highlight the importance of the census and encourage New Mexicans to fill it out.
The 2020 Census can be completed by phone, mail or online. The survey does not have a citizenship question and all information provided is kept confidential. Additional information on the Census collection, how to receive a form or how to fill it out can be found here .
