Udall Statement in Honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall issued the following statement in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

"Martin Luther King Jr. once said that 'the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.' There is a profound truth and great hope in those words. Dr. King had a dream of a more just society. His dream, which he championed so eloquently and gave his life for so bravely, is our dream too. The great ideal of America is equal opportunity and justice for all, but social justice is a work in progress, and a promise that must always be defended.

"More than four decades after Dr. King's death, he still still inspires us, challenges us, and moves us forward. We too are part of the arc of history, and we too must make sure it bends toward justice. We live in trying times - in a world where oppression is all too apparent and all too common. As long as there is oppression in the world, the promised land remains a destination - not an arrival. Today we honor Martin Luther King Jr. He calls on us to remember, today and every day, the long road to freedom and the dedicated and courageous individuals who make that journey, who travel that road and who fight for a better world."
