Udall Statement on President's Executive Order on Stem Cell Research

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Tom Udall, D-N.M., today issued the following statement on President Obama's Executive Order reversing the ban on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research:

"By signing the executive order lifting the ban on federal funding for existing embryonic stem cell research today, President Obama has reaffirmed our country's commitment to life saving scientific discoveries and technological breakthroughs.

" Most everyone has a story of a loved one impacted by conditions or diseases like diabetes, Alzheimer's, spinal cord injuries or Parkinson's disease. Stem cells have the ability to develop into virtually any cell in the body and with responsible research may have the potential to cure these and other conditions.

"There are too many people across the world suffering from devastating diseases and conditions for which stem cells hold great hope and promise. By signing this executive order, President Obama has opened new doors of hope and science for these individuals and their loved ones. It is a great day for scientific progress, and more importantly, for people suffering from debilitating diseases and conditions."
