Udall Statement on Trump’s Sabotage of Health Care System

Calls for bipartisan action from Congress to fund CSRs, stabilize individual market, improve health care

WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall released the following statement on the Trump administration’s announcement that it will no longer make cost-sharing reduction (CSR) payments, a decision which will likely send out-of-pocket costs soaring for millions of Americans and cause instability in the individual marketplace.

“President Trump’s spiteful and deliberate sabotage of New Mexicans’ and Americans’ health care has reached a dangerous new low. The administration’s decision to cut off CSR payments will send out-of-pocket costs through the roof and jeopardize access to care for millions of Americans. This latest attack on a critical part of the ACA will likely send the individual marketplace into chaos and severely reduce already limited choices, especially in rural areas.

"The president couldn’t get TrumpCare through Congress because the American people spoke out in record numbers against it. But rather than listening to the voices of millions of Americans, President Trump is responding to his own failure in Congress with a vindictive move that will cause real pain for families all across the country, especially the most vulnerable.

“New Mexicans and Americans are fed up with President Trump and Washington Republicans’ attacks on their health care. It’s time for Congress to come together in a bipartisan way to make these cost-sharing payments permanent, to provide stability to the individual marketplace, and to make common-sense improvements to health care for every family. The president has made it very clear that he is not interested in making these improvements, but I will continue to work with other members of Congress on both sides of the aisle to make these needed changes."
