WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall, the lead Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior and Environment and the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on International Economic, Energy, and Environmental Policy, released the following statement on the White House's plan to cut carbon pollution by 28 percent. The plan is part of an international coalition taking action to combat climate change following the historic climate agreement between the U.S. and China. Udall also joined several congressional Democrats today to thank President Obama for leading efforts to address global climate change.
"Global warming by definition requires strong international cooperation, and I am glad to see the United States taking a leadership role and bringing other large emitters like China along. By moving proactively, we set a strong example for the rest of the world, and we can seize opportunities to jump-start job creation in expanding industries like clean energy technology and energy efficiency. New Mexico's water supply and public health are both at great risk from unchecked global warming, but our state also has great potential to capitalize on the solutions with our vast clean energy resources. As the international negotiations continue, I will be working in Congress to support them and other smart policies to reduce carbon pollution."
