WASHINGTON— Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.) released the following statement calling on all New Mexicans to fill out the 2020 Census in recognition of the national “Census Day”:
“Every New Mexican counts—and one of the biggest contributions that New Mexicans can make to their neighbors, themselves, their families and their communities is to fill out their Census form,” said Udall, senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. “These trying times show us how important our frontline health care workers and hospitals are to our communities. We need a strong Census count to ensure these providers and hospitals have the strong funding they need to continue keeping us healthy long into the future. While we are staying home to slow the spread of this virus and save lives, one of the best ways to contribute to your community is to fill out the Census form and encourage your friends, family and neighbors to do the same. Because the Census Bureau has temporarily suspended its field operations to protect workers and communities across the country from COVID-19, all of us need to step up to raise awareness of the importance of filling out the Census online or by phone.
“The form is only ten questions, but it plays a big role in determining how much funding New Mexicans receive for vital federal programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, infrastructure, rural programs and school lunches. The Census does not have a citizenship question, and all information is private and protected by law from being shared with any other agency or branch of government.
“New Mexico is particularly at risk of an undercount,” Udall continued. “Just a one percent undercount in New Mexico could result in losing approximately $1 billion in federal funds over the next 10 years. We can’t allow that to happen. We know that every New Mexican counts, so let’s make sure that every New Mexican responds to the Census.”
Udall has launched a campaign on his social media channels, #CensusCounts , to highlight the importance of the census and encourage New Mexicans to fill it out.
The Census Bureau announced a temporary suspension of field operations in historically hard-to-count areas in order to maintain social distancing guidelines and slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.
The 2020 Census can be completed by phone, mail or online. The survey does not have a citizenship question and all information provided is kept confidential. Additional information on the Census collection, how to receive a form or how to fill it out can be found here.
