Congressional Delegation Announces Over $38 Million in Recovery Funds to Build Homes in New Mexico

Resources Will Help Provide Affordable Housing

WASHINGTON - New Mexico's Congressional Delegation today announced that communities around New Mexico will receive a total of $38.25 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to construct or acquire and rehabilitate housing for low-income families and individuals. The resources are intended to protect and expand constructions jobs while making it easier for families to find affordable housing.

"Unfortunately, the current economic situation has increased the number of people struggling to find affordable housing. The funding being released today will help provide those in need of assistance with a safe place to live," said Senator Jeff Bingaman.

"This large influx of funding can make a huge difference in ensuring that our workers have jobs and our families have homes," said Senator Tom Udall. "Once again, the Recovery Act is helping to boost our economy by putting our people to work on the work we need done."

"Owning a home is part of the American dream. This initiative will make the dream of owning quality, affordable housing a reality for working families." said Representative Martin Heinrich. "This is another example of the Recovery Act putting New Mexicans to work and opening the door to economic stability."

"This $38 million in funding for New Mexico is an example of how the Recovery Act can address needs in our communities while helping to boost the economy," said Representative Harry Teague. "This funding will help put people back to work constructing and rehabilitating affordable housing projects in small and rural communities across New Mexico."

"This important investment in our communities will assist New Mexicans who need help the most while creating jobs and encouraging construction in communities throughout the state," said Representative Ben Ray Luján. "It is encouraging that funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is making its way into communities and helping people during these difficult economic times."

President Obama signed ARRA on February 17, 2009. The legislation was designed to preserve and create jobs in the near term and to invest in infrastructure that will provide long-term economic benefits. Every member of New Mexico's Congressional delegation voted for ARRA.
