WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tom Udall, D-NM, today announced that New Mexico will receive almost $900,000 to upgrade the state’s E-911 technology so that emergency responders can more quickly locate people who call 911 from wireless or Internet-connected phones.
The $888,893 grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will allow New Mexico to improve its current emergency response system to account for the large increase of emergency calls originating from cell phones or Internet-connected telephones.
“The majority of emergency 911 calls originate from cell phones or other wireless devices,” Udall said. “This funding will save lives by allowing emergency responders to more rapidly locate these callers and send aid quickly.”
