Udall Announces $$$ to Improve Scenic Roads in New Mexico

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tom Udall, D-N.M. today announced that New Mexico will receive $365,000 in federal funding to improve scenic byways throughout the state. The funding comes from five U.S. Department of Transportation grants to help improve the travel experience along the roadways.

“New Mexico’s scenic byways allow us to share our culture and history with residents and visitors within the state and I am pleased this funding will help promote them,” Udall said.

New Mexico has 26 scenic byways that showcase some of the stunning scenery and historic sites found in the state, including the Billy the Kid Trail, El Camino Real, and historic Route 66. Scenic byways are selected based on archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic interest.

The funding will be for roadside markers, interpretive exhibits, and promotional materials designed to promote tourism as well as spark the interest of residents who live along the routes.
