Today, I had the chance to ask Toyota and government regulators the tough questions that the millions of American Toyota owners, including myself, want answered. Here's an overview of the meeting and video of my questioning and remarks.
During the morning session, which focused on the government's response to the recalls, I questioned Transportation Secretary LaHood about a spike in consumer safety complaints reported in today's New York Times and why it did not trigger an alarm within the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
And during the afternoon session, we focused on Toyota's actions leading up to and after the recalls. I pushed Toyota executives to install brake override technology in their vehicles. Company officials told me that they hope to have the technology in the models that have received the most consumer complaints by the end of the year.
From what I saw and heard at the Senate Commerce Committee's hearing on the recalls, I think it's clear that we need to demand better corporate responsibility from Toyota and improved government regulations and oversight.
