WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Tom Udall today announced that two community health centers in New Mexico will receive more than $2.6 million to fund primary care services for community health centers in Albuquerque and El Rito.
Las Clinicas Del Norte Inc. in El Rito will receive $1.8 million and First Nations Community HealthSource of Albuquerque will receive $795,544. This funding is distributed through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Health Resources and Services Administration.
"First Nations Community HealthSource and Las Clinicas Del Norte provide critical primary care services in areas where people often have difficulty finding and affording quality care. Health centers like these are essential to building and maintaining healthy communities, and I pleased this funding will allow them to continue providing this important service," Udall said.
Las Clinicas Del Norte provides services to 10,500 residents in the rural area of Rio Arriba and Taos counties, which are experiencing extremely high poverty and unemployment rates. Of the people served by Las Clinicas Del Norte, 80 percent cannot afford health or dental insurance.
First Nations Community HealthSource serves approximately 9,000 primarily low-income, uninsured individuals and families as well as homeless in one of the most distressed neighborhoods in Albuquerque. The clinic's priorities include providing a comprehensive array of medical, dental, behavioral health, substance abuse, health education and enabling services as well as traditional healing methods for the large Native American population in the area.
