Udall Marks 40th Celebration of Earth Day

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall issued the following statement marking the 40th celebration of Earth Day:

"Earth Day serves as an annual reminder of the growing threats that face our planet's natural environment and consequently its people. It also serves as an important opportunity to educate our nation about the contributions we can make to protect the earth for future generations and prevent global warming.

"This Earth Day, I encourage all New Mexicans to be more conscientious of earth's limited resources. All of us can have a positive impact through easy changes to our everyday routines like conserving water, recycling and reducing our energy use. By taking these small steps together, we can make big strides in caring for our planet."

The first Earth Day was celebrated April 22, 1970. Earth day was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as a day to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. The Earth Day Network anticipates at least 1.5 billion people will participate in this year's global events and programs.

Udall serves on the Senate's Committee on the Environment and Public Works.
