WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall today announced that the Santa Fe Indian School will receive funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to complete construction of a new gymnasium.
Initially, the school was not in line for ARRA funds. But favorable pricing on other projects and aggressive management of the budget made room for additional Bureau of Indian Affairs construction projects.
"This investment in the Santa Fe Indian School not only means that students will get a new gymnasium, but that more good construction jobs will be created in our state," Bingaman said. "This unexpected announcement is very good news for our state."
"I am so pleased that the Recovery Act will allow the Santa Fe Indian School community to finally finish the wellness center that was started several years ago," Udall, member of the Committee on Indian Affairs, said. "The wellness facility will provide students with a safe place to engage in physical fitness and health related activities to improve their overall well being."
Phase 1 of construction was funded by the State of New Mexico to complete the exterior of the building. ARRA funding will support the completion of the interior and makes the facility functional.
