WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) issued the following statement today lauding the president's historic 54.5 mpg Fuel Efficiency Standard:
"President Obama's announcement on CAFE standards is a welcome one. The economic vitality and security of the United States is interconnected with our dependence on fossil fuels, often to our detriment. When gas prices spike because of instability overseas, as it did recently, working families feel the drain in their bank accounts. In rural states like New Mexico, we depend on cars and trucks to get to work and take the kids to school so fuel efficient vehicles can make a big difference in a family budget. Innovation and ingenuity are hallmarks of America's enterprising spirit and with aggressive goals like the one announced today we can make our families and our nation more secure."
