WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) today announced a $1.2 million investment by the U.S. Department of Interior to improve New Mexico's water infrastructure.
This funding is made possible through the Bureau of Reclamation and includes six projects across the country including two in New Mexico.
The Eastern New Mexico Water Supply Project will receive $1 million for construction of an intake structure at the Ute reservoir that will supply water to Clovis, Elida, Grady, Melrose, Portales and Texico in order to reduce reliance on unsustainable groundwater use from the Ogallala Aquifer.
The Jicarilla Apache Rural Water System will receive $200,000 for construction of new water and wastewater facilities in Dulce.
"Access to quality water continues to be a problem across New Mexico. With this funding, these communities can ensure that they have clean and reliable water," Udall said. "I applaud the Department of Interior for their critical investment to see that New Mexico communities have up-to-date water systems."
New Mexico's projects were chosen after consideration of time and financial resources already committed by project beneficiaries, perspective on regional watersheds and compelling need - such as water quality, residents served, economic impact and water use efficiency.
