Udall: Sandoval County Awarded $5 Million Transportation Grant

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Tom Udall, a member of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, today announced that Sandoval County will receive a $5 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant to improve Torreon Road in Sandoval County and the Navajo Nation.

"Torreon Road provides a vital connection to schools, hospitals and jobs within Sandoval County and the Navajo Nation," said Udall. "Yet it is currently unsafe. This project will greatly improve the commutes for those who travel it everyday and will help to sustain and encourage new economic development in the area."

Torreon Road serves the Navajo Nation Chapters of Torreon, Encino, Whitehorse Lake and Counselor. It is the primary connection for the area to the larger communities of Cuba and Albuquerque. The funding will provide for the elimination of unpaved areas and large potholes, as well as improved signage and drainage facilities.

The funding was made possible through the U.S. Department of Transportation's TIGER Discretionary Grant program. TIGER grants seek to invest in transportation projects that will significantly benefit the livelihood of communities on the regional, state and national level. Due to incredible need for infrastructure investment, they are highly competitive and involve a rigorous application process.
