ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - U.S. Senator Tom Udall issued the following statement on the Department of Defense agreement to rescind its objection to the SunZia transmission line through a part of the "call-up area" north of the White Sands Missile Range.
"The long-term viability of the White Sands Missile Range and the future of renewable energy development in New Mexico are both crucial to our state's economy and our national security. Throughout this long process I've urged DoD, Interior, and SunZia to work through these difficult siting issues and reach a mutually agreeable resolution. This letter from DoD rescinding its objection -- as long as SunZia buries a portion of the line -- signals an agreement that will preserve the valuable testing and training capacity of White Sands Missile Range, protect our national security and expand New Mexico's renewable energy potential. The details need to be worked out, but I believe this is a positive development for all involved."
