Udall Celebrates National Native American Heritage Month

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall joined a bipartisan coalition of senators to introduce a resolution recognizing November as National Native American Heritage Month, celebrating the heritage, culture and contributions of Native Americans in New Mexico and across the nation.

Udall released the following statement:

"As a member of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, I take great pride in working with, representing and defending the sovereignty of Native American communities, and I'm pleased to recognize Native American Heritage Month as a time to celebrate the integral role of Native Americans in our identity as a nation. New Mexico is home to 19 pueblos, two Apache Nations and the Navajo Nation, and our state's unique cultural depth is rooted in their vibrant art, music, language, agriculture, history and traditions.

"From traditions passed down from time immemorial to the Navajo Code Talkers who helped save countless lives during World War II to today, Native Americans have helped shape our country's history and culture, and they continue to distinguish themselves - as entrepreneurs, scholars, health professionals, members of our armed forces and in leadership positions across our communities. As we celebrate the important contributions of Native Americans, we must also recognize the federal government's trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, and recommit to respecting our unique government-to-government relationship. We must collaborate to ensure that Tribal communities have the tools and resources to address enduring challenges - by improving access to quality health care and housing, bolstering Native American education and supporting the preservation of Native languages. Together we can build healthy communities with strong economies that will continue to create jobs and opportunities for future generations."
