WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall, a member of the Senate Democratic Hispanic Task Force, issued the following statement commemorating the life and legacy of labor leader and civil rights activist César Chávez. Udall is cosponsoring a resolution in the Senate to honor Chávez and designate his birthday, March 31, as "César Chávez Day."
"César Chávez fought tirelessly to improve working conditions for farm workers nationwide, including fair pay and treatment. His story is one of persistence, hard work, and a deep commitment to social justice, and I'm proud to honor that inspiring legacy. Chávez is a hero to me and many other New Mexicans who admire his confidence in our ability to unify and bring about social change in the face of injustice. César Chávez's message still resonates and inspires us today as we continue in his footsteps, working to ensure equality, justice and dignity for all people."
