Udall Calls for Unity and Commitment to America’s Diversity Following Results of Presidential Election

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – U. S. Senator Tom Udall released the following statement on the results of the presidential election:

"We have just come through one of the most contentious elections any of us have ever known, and now we must begin the very hard work of bringing Americans back together. Donald Trump is our president-elect, and I appreciate his appeal for unity last night. Now he must demonstrate that he is committed to following through -- the world is watching. Like many Americans, I was deeply disturbed by the tone of Mr. Trump's campaign; from his proposal to build a border wall to his offensive characterization of women and Hispanic and Muslim immigrants. I do not accept policies that would treat some people with prejudice and bigotry, and I will fight every step of the way against those that would rip apart families and divide our proudly diverse state and nation.

"With the popular vote margin likely to show that Mr. Trump did not receive a majority of the ballots cast in this election, I don't believe this election was a mandate for many of the ideas he put forward in his campaign. The results of New Mexico's election - and those in Colorado, Nevada and others - proved that people want to invest in our families and a hopeful, inclusive America. I'm proud that we increased the number of women serving in the U.S. Senate, including the first Latina U.S. Senator in history, Catherine Cortez Masto. And I will continue to fight as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee for working families in New Mexico, for our national labs, military bases, veterans, public lands and rural communities - and to create jobs, rebuild our infrastructure and ensure our government works for all of the American people, not deep-pocketed special interests.

"America is strong, and we will keep it that way by affirming our commitment to the bedrock American principle we cherish: that all people have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, no matter their background. We must address the real tensions that people feel, and I believe we can do that by lifting everyone up."
