WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall released the following statement on the New York Times report that President Trump ordered the firing of Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Last July, Udall advanced an amendment in the Senate Appropriations Committee that would direct the Department of Justice to follow existing regulations which prevent the unlawful firing of the special counsel.
“This report is stunning confirmation of President Trump’s willingness to upend the rule of law and attack our institutions to protect himself, his family, and his inner circle. Members of Congress — Democrat and Republican — have an urgent responsibility to send a clear message to the president: any attempt to fire Special Counsel Mueller will be met with swift and unflinching action from Congress. Congress should enact legislation quickly on any moving vehicle to direct the Department of Justice that the special counsel cannot be removed by any president or any attorney general without cause.”
