Udall: Trump’s NAFTA Announcement Raises More Questions Than Answers

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.) released the following statement on President Trump’s announcement on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA):

“President Trump’s announcement today raises more questions than answers for the thousands of New Mexicans whose livelihoods depend on trade with Mexico, our state’s most important trading partner. Yet again, the president is claiming to have achieved a major breakthrough – but the White House has not released the tentative agreement to the public. The American people are left wondering what has been accomplished.

“I will thoroughly review the details of whatever agreement has been reached when they are available, and I welcome any progress toward a deal that protects New Mexico’s critical trade relationship with Mexico and includes better worker and environmental protections. But here is what we know for sure: the Trump administration’s chaotic and destructive approach to NAFTA, trade, and our relationship with Mexico has held back economic growth in New Mexico, particularly in our state’s border region. Any significant change to NAFTA will require approval from Congress, and I will continue to fight for trade policies that advance the interests of New Mexico’s workers, economy, and environment.”
