WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tom Udall issued the following statement on the 17 th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks:
“Today, we join together as a nation to reflect on the tragic events of 9/11 and commemorate the nearly 3,000 lives lost in its aftermath. We remember the first responders who rushed into burning buildings to the aid of others, the passengers who selflessly charged the cockpit door to wrest control from hijackers, and all those who lost their lives or were injured in the call to duty. As we honor those who sacrificed so much to put country first, we recognize those who continue to defend our freedoms and serve our nation – in New Mexico, across the nation and around the world.
“Seventeen years ago, our nation demonstrated unity and resolve in the face of an appalling attack on our people and our most cherished ideals. When confronted with an act of hate, we chose to respond with courage and compassion. Let us renew our commitment to those ideals by once again choosing courage over fear, compassion over hate, and unity over division.”
