Udall Statement On Supreme Court Blocking Census Citizenship Question

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.) issued the following statement after the Supreme Court blocked a citizenship question from being added to the 2020 Census for the time being:

“Today's decision from the Supreme Court is a relief for New Mexico communities. Ensuring an accurate census count is critical to making sure that every community in our state gets its rightful share of federal resources—hundreds of millions of dollars are stake. The Trump administration’s proposal to add a citizenship question to the census was nothing more than a partisan ploy to intimidate immigrant communities. The Supreme Court’s ruling is an important victory on the road to ensuring a fair and accurate 2020 Census, but this isn’t over. We must stay vigilant to make sure everyone is counted and that New Mexico – one of the hardest states to count – gets its fair share.”

In May , Senator Udall and U.S. Census Bureau Director Steven Dillingham held a meeting with local officials and leaders from Valencia County followed by a tour of remote areas in Los Lunas, NM. Discussions focused the importance of ensuring an accurate count for the upcoming 2020 Census.
