WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall issued the following statement on reports that the Trump administration is planning to carry out nationwide immigration raids , raids that will reportedly involve arresting children and family separation:
“The Trump administration is once again resorting to the only policy it knows on immigration: intentionally sowing fear and chaos through immigrant communities in New Mexico and across the country. This time, they’re doing so through indiscriminate roundups that will inevitably mean arresting children and separating families, as well as anyone else on the scene whether they were a target or not. President Trump and his administration’s terrible immigration priorities and failing policies are upending families and creating a culture of fear that makes our communities less safe by creating fear of law enforcement agencies. Even worse, the Trump administration is reportedly planning sweeping raids with full knowledge they will rip families apart and arrest and separate children from their families—even babies and toddlers. Family separation continues to be a stain on our nation’s history, and many families that were previously separated have still not been reunited. Doubling down on this horrific policy is intolerable – so morally wrong that even officials within this administration have reportedly expressed their opposition to these actions.
“I will keep working to hold the Trump administration accountable for its treatment of children and families in custody and for its destructive immigration agenda. We need to work toward real solutions to fix our immigration system, not rely on policies and rhetoric grounded in fear, division, and ugly politics.”
