Udall Statement on Robert Mueller’s Testimony Before the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.) issued the following statement on former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s testimony before the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees on the Russia investigation:

“Today, Robert Mueller provided a valuable public service by testifying about the deeply troubling facts and findings from his report. First, a foreign adversary intervened in our presidential elections in an effort to tip the scales to benefit the Trump campaign – and these efforts were welcomed, including by candidate Trump himself. Second, the Special Counsel’s report does not exonerate the president and, in fact, it lays out multiple instances in which President Trump clearly attempted to interfere with Mueller’s probe into his campaign. While the Special Counsel did not reach a definitive conclusion regarding obstruction of justice, his report presents disturbing evidence to suggest it, as well as a strong legal basis for further criminal investigations, oversight and congressional inquiry into these deeply serious matters, including requiring the witnesses to these acts to appear before Congress.

“One thing is very clear after Robert Mueller’s testimony : foreign interference in our elections is ongoing and serious. And it will quickly become the new normal unless we enact strong measures to protect our elections -- before it’s too late. The House has already passed our For The People Act package to fix the cracks in our electoral system and strengthen election security but Leader McConnell continues to leave these urgent protections languishing in his legislative graveyard. It’s long past time for Senate Republicans to get out of the way and let it pass. Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our system of government, and we must act quickly to restore the American public’s faith in the integrity of our democracy.”
